A solar eclipse occurs when the moon cast its shadow on the Earth as it passes between the Earth and the Sun. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon appears to totally obscure the Sun.
When a solar eclipse reaches totality, nocturnal wildlife sometimes wakes up, thinking that it’s nighttime, and non-nocturnal wildlife might think it’s time to head to sleep!
On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will trace a narrow path of totality across 13 U.S.
On Monday, April 8, 2024, people within a 124-mile-wide band in the state of Ohio will experience a total solar eclipse.
When watching a partial eclipse you must wear eclipse glasses at all times if you want to face the sun, or use an alternate indirect method. This also applies during a total eclipse up until the time when the sun is completely and totally blocked.
You can view the total solar eclipse directly without proper eye protection only during the total solar eclipses totality (when the Moon completely obscures the Sun's bright face).
Look for glasses that are certified ISO 12312-2 and verify the glasses are not expired or damaged.
